Relief Applications supported Better Work (ILO/IFC) to enhance its Transparency Portal, a public platform sharing factory compliance data for the global garment industry. The project focused on expanding country coverage in data visualisation, integrating historical compliance data, fixing filters and UI issues, and making the portal WCAG-compliant, multilingual, and fully usable for diverse stakeholders.
The Better Work Transparency Portal is a flagship initiative that publishes factory compliance data to promote transparency and improved working conditions in the global garment industry. However, usability issues, partial country coverage in data visualisation, accessibility gaps, and data inconsistencies limited its impact for buyers, factories, policymakers, and researchers who rely on accurate, inclusive information to guide their decisions.
Better Work engaged Relief Applications to strengthen the Transparency Portal by expanding its analytical depth and ensuring inclusive access. Our approach combined a detailed functional review with targeted technical upgrades: enabling data visualisation for all countries with available data, integrating historical compliance information for Better Factories Cambodia, aligning the platform with WCAG accessibility standards, refining filters and exports, and improving multilingual support (including right-to-left languages) to ensure stakeholders could reliably explore and interpret compliance trends.
We delivered a package of enhancements including extended country coverage, WCAG-aligned interface updates, improved data export and translation logic, corrected email notifications for factories, systematic typo and error fixes, and optimised support for RTL languages. Together, these upgrades reinforced the Transparency Portal as an accessible, robust, and user-friendly tool for monitoring labour compliance across the garment sector.
